Walking Outdoors in Neighborhoods pre-Diabetes Environmental Research (WONDER): A
collaboration with the University of Minnesota. The project is co-led by Drs. Teresa Horton (NU) and Mark Pereira (UMN). This multisite mechanistic randomized crossover trial in 180 adults with pre-diabetes will take place in metropolitan Chicago, IL, and Minneapolis/St. Paul, MN. Comparisons will be made between the effects of six weeks of walking (150 min/week) in natural urban greenspaces and urban areas lacking greenspace. The primary outcomes include measures of psychosocial and physiological stress, air pollution exposure, and biological risk markers for diabetes, inflammation, and cardiovascular disease. (Funded by NIH/HLBI and The Negaunee Foundation)
