In September Dr. Teresa Horton along with Dani Abboud, presented on the ways in which nature organizations can lend themselves to be a part of public health solutions. The presentation leaned on the research of the Horton Research Group, along with many others, to demonstrate the physical and mental health benefits of spending time in nature. This research was viewed through an equity lens as, despite the proven benefits of time spent in high quality natural environments, many communities still face barriers to accessing nature and a clean environment due to historic and present systemic injustices. During the presentation this research, along with the tools needed for implementing a “Health, Equity and Nature Report” and other community-centered solutions in participants' communities was discussed at length. The importance of interdisciplinary partnerships, community-specific interventions, and public health mindfulness was explored and participants left with more tools in their belt that will allow them to create helpful and specific action plans for their individual communities.
Being included in the Rally 2023 presentation line-up was a delight and an honor. HRG is happy to be in such good company and we remain incredibly energized by the efforts of our colleagues across the country and world. Interested in learning more? Reach out to Dr. Horton at [email protected]
